Art By Rachel Burgess
Rachel Burgess grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts. She received a B.A. in Literature from Yale University in 2004, and an M.F.A. in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in 2007. Her work has appeared in various galleries in New York and in Maine, as well as on the covers of books and magazines. She currently lives in Manhattan, where she divides her time between printmaking and art instruction.
I grew up with the scenery of northern New England, and as an adult I find myself viewing new places through the lens of New England’s architecture, proportions, light and history. My prints and paintings explore not only features of the landscape I found beautiful as a child, but examples of its persistence in my visual perception. Today, although I live in New York City, I find my eyes search out the same aspects of Brooklyn and Manhattan that they did the places of my childhood, and my work reflects this continuance of the old into the new.
